Hate Crime Bill Becomes Law in Georgia

In June of 2020 – following the murder of Ahmaud Arbery in Brunswick – Governor Brian Kemp signed into law House Bill 426 – the “Georgia Enhanced Penalties for Hate Crimes Act.”

Georgia Equality is proud to have worked in coalition with the Anti-Defamation League on hate crime legislation, which became the first law to ever specifically protect LGBTQ Georgians. “It is truly a historic moment for Georgia. A bill that was first passed at the state level in California in 1984 and has been a priority of Georgia’s LGBTQ community since the early 1990’s, has finally passed” said Georgia Equality’s executive director Jeff Graham.

The Georgia Enhanced Penalties for Hate Crimes Act provides stronger penalties for individuals who target victims because of their actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender, mental disability, or physical disability. It also requires local law enforcement agencies to collect data on hate crime investigations and provide “Bias Crime Reports” to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is essential for effective enforcement of the law.

Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, a global moment of solidarity and resistance for LGBTQ+ communities.

This year's theme is “At the heart of democracy” – a timely reminder that truly democratic societies must be grounded in justice and freedom for all. When governments roll back rights, they weaken democracy for everyone.

We are proud to fight day in and day out for fairness, safety, and opportunity for all LGBTQ+ Georgians, and we're especially proud to be in this fight alongside you. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

NEWS: Last week, Frontline Policy Action, an anti- NEWS: Last week, Frontline Policy Action, an anti-LGBTQ hate group, endorsed the two incumbents running for re-election to Georgia's Supreme Court. In response, we issued a statement with our partners at @splcaction.

“Our same opponents from the Gold Dome are now also attempting to take over our State Supreme Court to force their extremist agenda upon even more Georgians. The stakes in the State Supreme Court election are incredibly high, and we cannot afford to hand our opponents a win due to a lack of awareness regarding this pivotal race,” said Graham.

These races may be listed as nonpartisan, but the stakes are anything but neutral. Frontline Policy Action’s endorsement is not just another political preference. It is a warning sign.
