LGBTQ Housing Justice

Advancing the civil rights and dignity of transgender Georgians.

AIDS Walk Atlanta is September 26th!

The Issue at Hand

Housing is the foundation for everything else in our lives. That’s why we’re working tirelessly to make Georgia a state where all people, including LGBTQ people and people living with HIV, have access to the stable, dignified, and affordable housing that they need to thrive.

Today, LGBTQ people and people living with HIV can face extraordinary barriers to housing. Nationally, LGBTQ people experience homelessness at more than twice the rate of their peers, with even higher rates among LGBTQ people of color and youth. And almost 70% of people living with HIV across the country have experienced homelessness at some point. Here in Georgia, these disparities are further compounded by a lack of state nondiscrimination protections for sexual orientation and gender identity, and housing solutions that often fail to address the unique needs of LGBTQ communities and people living with HIV.

Equality Foundation of Georgia’s housing advocacy work addresses both immediate crises and long-term systemic change. At the state level, we’re fighting for housing protections based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and HIV status, safeguards that many other states already provide. We’re working to protect and increase funding for housing and support services that will help LGBTQ people and people living with HIV access housing and remain housed long-term. And we’re also advocating to strengthen tenant protections for everyone through measures like lifting the ban on rental registries, ending exploitative junk fees, reining in corporate ownership and AI-driven price-fixing, and strengthening enforcement of housing habitability standards.

At the local level, our advocacy focuses on policy changes that can create immediate impact. We’re pushing for nondiscrimination ordinances that cover housing. We’re encouraging local investment from cities and counties, from local housing trust funds to HIV housing initiatives. We’re monitoring local actions with LGBTQ equity in mind, making sure that policies uplift all communities. And we’re advocating for effective coordination of HIV housing strategies through programs like HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS) and Ryan White, with a focus on data-driven solutions, transparency, and genuine responsiveness to community needs.

This work matters because housing instability doesn’t just mean lacking shelter—it cascades into every aspect of life. Without stable housing, people living with HIV struggle to maintain consistent medication adherence and attend healthcare appointments. LGBTQ youth aging out of foster care or fleeing rejection face heightened vulnerability to exploitation and violence. LGBTQ seniors find few affirming long-term care options. And all LGBTQ Georgians navigating housing insecurity face barriers to employment, education, mental health, and community connection. By centering the voices of those most impacted, building coalitions across movements, and persistently showing up in policy spaces from the State Capitol to county commissions, Equality Foundation of Georgia is working to ensure that Georgia’s response to the housing crisis serves all residents, because none of us can be truly free without a safe place to call home.

Today, August 20, is Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness D Today, August 20, is Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a day dedicated to calling attention to the disproportionate number of people living with HIV in the south. This disparity is caused by a number of factors– including systemic inequality, stigma, and misinformed policies.

"In the South, we know how to hold pain and possibility in the same breath. We are the region most burdened by HIV, yet also the heartbeat of resilience, care, and cultural power. Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day isn’t just a date. It’s a declaration.

A declaration that Black, Brown, queer, trans, rural, and working-class people in the South deserve access to life-saving prevention and treatment. That stigma must die before our people do. That silence is not an option when systems keep failing us," writes Kayla Quimbley-Young, HIV Policy Manager.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Let Kids Thank you to everyone who came out to our Let Kids Play Inclusive Field Day last week! This all-ages, all-gender event was the perfect joyful response to those— like the Supreme Court— who may seek to take away our opportunity to play with our peers.

A big thank you to all of our amazing partner organizations who worked hard to bring this event together! 🩷🤍🩵
