Help us Create the Georgia Equality Archive
As we continue to celebrate Georgia Equality’s 25th anniversary we like to extend an invitation to you, our members, to join us in creating a Georgia Equality archive. As is true with so many LGBTQ organizations, Georgia Equality was founded by a committed group of volunteers who wanted to strengthen our community’s effectiveness at city hall and the State Capitol. In the challenges of creating and building an organization, the last things most folks think about is keeping a record of what those early days were like. As people move on over time, it becomes harder and harder to remember what those early challenges were, how they were overcome and who were the people who built the foundation upon which today’s successes depend upon.
That’s why we’re asking for your help in creating this archive.
With a new generation of activists coming into their own power, it’s important to learn from this history. That why the Georgia LGBT History Archives Project was formed. The Georgia LGBTQ Archives Project is a group started by a group of dedicated archivists/librarians and community volunteers who want to see Georgia’s LGBTQ past preserved for future generations. A lot of that history resides in people’s photo albums, private letters, and papers. This group is committed to raising awareness among LGBTQ Georgians of the value of the items they have–such as those just listed as well as protest signs used in parades, t-shirts, flyers, etc.
For this archive, we’re interested in copies of old board minutes, ads and promotions for educational events and programs from our fundraisers. We’d also love any photos you may have taken of Georgia Equality activities, especially if you know who is in the photo and what event it was taken at. No item is too old or too obscure. It’s all an important part of the story of Georgia Equality and the history of our movement.
If you have items you’d like to donate, please box them up and send them to the Georgia Equality office at 1530 DeKalb Avenue, Suite A, Atlanta, GA 30307.
