Marriage Equality Efforts

Latest marriage news from Georgia

Over the past several months, at events, town hall meetings, emails, social networking and community rallies, Georgia Equality has been talking with you about building the movement we all deserve in our home state of Georgia. As part of these efforts, in 2014, we are partnering with our friends at Freedom to Marry to launch the Why Marriage Matters Georgia Campaign.

A recent poll conducted by the Atlanta Journal Constitution showed that support for same-sex marriage in Georgia is growing. The poll found that 48 percent of residents favor gay marriage and 43 percent oppose it (9 percent didn’t know or didn’t answer). While this is encouraging, we have a lot of work to do to make marriage equality a reality. We are building the infrastructure that is needed to win marriage in Georgia.

We need to raise 50K to launch this campaign. The initial funds raised for the campaign will be used to conduct targeted polling to determine why the numbers have changed so rapidly, to develop strategic and effective messaging, to develop educational materials for the public and to conduct outreach to communities of faith.

The success of the Why Marriage Matters Georgia Campaign ultimately depends on LGBT Georgian’s and our allies being engaged in the movement. It will take you staying informed, volunteering your time, investing your money, voting in every election, and writing and calling your lawmakers.

This campaign is based on a simple belief: LGBT Georgians are living in every county of this state, and we want the same opportunity as everyone else to earn a living, pursue health and happiness, and take care of the ones we love.

Help build the vibrant and effective infrastructure we need to win the freedom to marry in our home state!

Legislative Update

Georgia capitol building

If you have been following what’s been happening in the state legislature leading up to “Crossover Day,”  we wanted to provide you with an update.

HB 1023 and SB 377 (both known as the “Preservation of Religious Freedom Act.”) were both stopped from getting a vote on either the House or Senate floor. The bills are dead for this session, although we will continue to monitor because technically the language could still come up in the form of an amendment to other legislation. The language in this legislation could have had serious and even harmful consequences for all Georgians.

Since first alerting the LGBT community and our allies across the state about this discriminatory legislation, you have sent over 2,500 emails to members of the House and Senate and Lt. Gov. Cagle (President of the Senate). You packed the committee hearing room and made dozens of phone calls. This was an extraordinary accomplishment!

There is power in numbers and we must continue to make our many voices heard to not only stop the bad stuff but to advance pro-equality legislation.  We need your help as we continue our work to pass the Fair Employment Practices Act. LGBT Georgians are living in every county of this state, and we want and deserve the same opportunity as everyone else to earn a living, pursue health and happiness, and take care of the ones we love.

We will continue to monitor legislation affecting LGBT Georgians and our allies through the end of the session.

Stay tuned for more updates….and A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL WHO TOOK ACTION!
