We did it! All anti-LGBTQ bills in Georgia DEFEATED!

After many late nights at the State Capitol to finish out the 2024 legislative session, we could not be more excited to share that WE DID IT! We successfully defeated ALL anti-LGBTQ legislation! Out of nearly 20 anti-LGBTQ bills that we fought against this session, we stopped every one!!

Despite underhanded and anti-democratic tactics being employed in these last couple weeks, over 5,000 of us contacted our legislators and hundreds came out to the Capitol to make their voices heard in-person.

Some of the bills we successfully defeated include:

  • SB 88: a ‘don’t say gay’ bill targeting LGBTQ topics in schools
  • HB 1045: a forced outing bill against students
  • HB 1128: a bill to redefine “sex” to exclude trans identities
  • SB 141 and 519: bills to further restrict access to gender-affirming care
  • HB 936 and 836: bathroom bans targeting trans students
  • SB 438: a ban on trans students participating in sports
  • SB 180 ‘RFRA’: a license to discriminate on the basis of religion
  • HB 1140: a surprise amendment to ban trans participation from school sports and use of correct restrooms
  • HB 1170: a surprise amendment to restrict access to medical care for trans youth

This win is to be shared by each and every one of us who showed up, showed out, spread the word, and raised our collective voices in opposition to discrimination. We are so very grateful to our fierce network of supporters and community members. None of this would have been possible without YOU! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

So far this year, we have begun to see anti-LGBTQ actors losing steam across the country as well. As more and more people stand in defense of LGBTQ people, and fewer fall for fear-mongering, these discriminatory policies are becoming much more unpopular– our own legislators would not have been employing anti-democratic tactics to silence us if they weren’t. That being said, the tide is turning nationally and we remain hopeful about our collective future. We hope you are, too.

We’re excited about the future and grateful to be in this fight with you.

Forever in solidarity,

–Your friends at Georgia Equality
