From Augusta to Atlanta, this month was BIG.
Hopefully you saw the news out of Augusta on November 16th — our state’s second largest city passed a comprehensive nondiscrimination ordinance that explicitly protects LGBTQ people and other historically marginalized groups! BUT. You may not know about a historic hearing held at the state capitol on the need to make those protections STATEWIDE.
We made huge gains this month, and if we keep it up, we WILL achieve statewide protections for every LGBTQ Georgian. Help us make that a reality with a contribution today!
With the passage of Augusta’s ordinance, 202,000 Georgians and countless others who work and visit there will have protections from discrimination in housing, employment, and public spaces. This new ordinance is a credit to a number of local advocates in Augusta, and we at Georgia Equality are so honored to have helped support their work. Now, 14 cities (including 2 counties) have passed an ordinance protecting LGBTQ people, and we are not stopping.
In addition to our city by city push for protections, we took an important step toward a state nondiscrimination law this week too — for the first time, members of the State Senate Judiciary Committee held an official hearing on why nondiscrimination protections are so critically needed in the state code. This hearing was the culmination of years of work, and I’m grateful to be able to share this accomplishment with all of you. It took all of us, so, thank you!
We will continue to fight for these protections for LGBTQ Georgians in cities, under the gold dome, and in DC. If this work is as important to you as it is to us, I hope you’ll continue to support this important work with a donation today!
Even more successes to come!
