A big night for Georgia Equality’s Endorsees

After a long night of watching election returns come in we still don’t know what will happen in the Gubernatorial race but one thing is certain: it was a great night for pro-equality candidates around the state — and we have you to thank for it! Over the past many months GE staff and volunteers have registered over 3,000 people to vote and engaged in over 100,000 voter contacts and it really made the difference.

Here are some of the highlights:

Matthew Wilson won his race in HD 80 and will become the 5th openly LGBTQ member of the state legislature

– Gwinnett County elected their first ever openly gay County Commissioner in Ben Ku

-The first openly gay man ever elected to the State House, Sam Park, won his re-election campaign by a wide margin against a well funded-challenger who had previously held that seat.

– In the Senate, we protected Sen. Jen Jordan from her challenger and elected two new pro-equality senators— Sally Harrel defeated anti-LGBTQ incumbent Sen. Fran Millar in SD 40 and Zahra Karinshak won her race in SD 48.

– House candidate Mary Frances Williams is ahead of the incumbent in HD 37 in Marietta. When she is certified as the winner, that will mean that the all of the major backers of RFRA legislation over the past few years who faced challengers lost their races.  Clearly being anti-LGBT is a growing concern to Georgia voters.

– In the House we elected new pro-equality candidates in  HD 40: Erick Allen, HD 50: Angelika Kausche, HD 79: Michael Wilensky, HD 95: Beth Moore, HD 102: Gregg Kennard, HD 105: Donna McLeod, HD 107: Shelley Hutchinson, HD 108: Jasmine Clark, HD 111: El-Mahdi Holly, and HD 153: Camia Thompson

John Barrow for Secretary of State and Lindy Miller for Public Service Commissioner will be in a December 4 runoff, and Stacey Abrams needs a net gain of less than 25,000 votes to secure a runoff in her race.  Please join us to prepare for these races by making a donation today.
