Update: 2,500 Georgians help BLOCK ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill

Late last night, the state legislature finished its 28th legislative day, or Crossover Day — and I’ve got good news. Because SB 613, the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, was not voted on by the full Senate, it is dead for the year!

Since it was filed 5 days ago, over 2,500 Georgians sent messages to their State Senator to stop this bill. I want to say a special THANK YOU to each person who sent a message and shared it with your community. We did this.

In all, SEVEN anti-LGBTQ bills were filed during the 2021-2022 legislative session, and now, we’ve stopped all of them but one — SB 435 (the trans athlete ban). We will continue to monitor the work of the General Assembly to make sure the language of SB 613 doesn’t resurrect, and to stop SB 435 once and for all.

Even after the legislature adjourns, this fight will continue through the rest of the year, and next. And that’s why I’m asking you to commit to fighting back by supporting our work with a monthly contribution to Georgia Equality. We can and we must outlast these anti-LGBTQ efforts, and you can help make that possible — with a monthly contribution today.

From removing student artwork in Athens, to attempts to ban trans students from sport, and this latest attempt to suppress LGBTQ students in the classroom, anti-LGBTQ forces are hard at work in Georgia. But there’s good news—to pass these harmful bills, they have to go through us! For the past 8 years, we’ve stood together to keep all anti-LGBTQ bills from becoming law in Georgia, but that record is under threat today. SB 435 does nothing to protect or support students, rather it serves only to spread hateful stereotypes. But this bill has powerful supporters so we need you to stand with us again this year.

LGBTQ students and families have just as much right to see themselves reflected in the classroom, the library, and on the field of play as other students do.
