If you have been following what’s been happening in the state legislature leading up to “Crossover Day,”  we wanted to provide you with an update.

HB 1023 and SB 377 (both known as the “Preservation of Religious Freedom Act.”) were both stopped from getting a vote on either the House or Senate floor. The bills are dead for this session, although we will continue to monitor because technically the language could still come up in the form of an amendment to other legislation. The language in this legislation could have had serious and even harmful consequences for all Georgians.

Since first alerting the LGBT community and our allies across the state about this discriminatory legislation, you have sent over 2,500 emails to members of the House and Senate and Lt. Gov. Cagle (President of the Senate). You packed the committee hearing room and made dozens of phone calls. This was an extraordinary accomplishment!

There is power in numbers and we must continue to make our many voices heard to not only stop the bad stuff but to advance pro-equality legislation.  We need your help as we continue our work to pass the Fair Employment Practices Act. LGBT Georgians are living in every county of this state, and we want and deserve the same opportunity as everyone else to earn a living, pursue health and happiness, and take care of the ones we love.

We will continue to monitor legislation affecting LGBT Georgians and our allies through the end of the session.
