ATLANTA, GA – Today Georgia Equality responded to Sunday’s New York Times report, detailing the Trump Administration’s plans to adopt a new legal definition for the term “sex” that could eviscerate federal protections for transgender Americans. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is considering a proposal that would define sex as “a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth.” This definition means that the federal government would cease to recognize the basic humanity of transgender and intersex Americans. Over the past seven months, GE’s Statewide Outreach Organizer Shannon Clawson has been on the road, registering LGBTQ Georgians and our allies to vote. Here’s her latest update:

With the deadline for voter registration approaching THIS TUESDAY October 9th, the Super Voter Team is winding down and reflecting on what we have accomplished so far. For seven months, the Super Voter team has been driving all over Georgia registering citizens to vote. We’ve gone to VA Hospitals, MARTA Stations, Universities in Morrow, Macon, Lawrenceville, Gainesville, Atlanta, Athens, and Augusta. We’ve gone door to door in LaGrange, canvassed at ColGay in Columbus, and visited churches in Stone Mountain. We’ve registered voters at five different Pride Festivals in five cities this summer and enjoyed engaging our beautiful community all over this state. In all, we have registered 3,130 Georgians in 15 different counties! We couldn’t have done it without our dedicated volunteers, team leads, and partner groups all over the state. Continue reading →

For five months, the Super Voter team has been driving all over Georgia registering citizens to vote. It’s an important job. Many Georgians are unaware that they are even eligible to vote. For example, formerly incarcerated people will often say, “I can’t vote, I’m a felon.” What they don’t know is that if they are “off paper” (meaning they have completed their sentence, paid all fines, and completed probation or parole) they are eligible to register and participate in this important election. The LGBTQ+ business resource group at Mercedes-Benz USA recently held their ‘Prism of Possibilities’ event at their new Sandy Springs headquarters. The event brought together local LGBTQ+ and ally professionals from Coca-Cola, Cox Enterprises, Home Depot, UPS, Accenture, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, AT&T, KPMG, VMWare, and other companies to meet and discuss working together to shape inclusive futures for their employees and communities.

The event included presentations from Georgia Equality, Lost & Found Youth, HRC Atlanta, The Gentlemen’s Foundation, I Am Midtown, and the Mayor’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Our Development and Communications Associate, Percy Brown (pictured), presented a snapshot of Georgia’s current fight for LGBTQ equality and how to get involved locally.
