On Tuesday, December 5, oral arguments were held in the Masterpiece Cake v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. While it’s easy to see this case as simply about the ability for a same-sex couple to receive wedding-related services, the Masterpiece case isn’t about cakes—rather it is an attempt to dismantle our nation’s nondiscrimination laws. The discrimination unleashed if the bakery wins this case would be staggering. The license to discriminate sought by the bakery could allow any kind of business that claims they use an element of creativity—for example, a restaurant, a hair salon, a school counselor, or a tailor—to tell anyone, not just same-sex couples, that “We don’t serve your kind here.” Continue reading

With runoff elections behind us,the work of continuing to push our state toward full LGBTQ equality now turns to our state capitol. Legislators will convene on January 9, 2018 for what is sure to be another action packed session. Many issues concerning LGBT Georgians are likely to be debated, but I’m not worried, and I’d like to tell you why. Hopefully after you’ve read my story you’ll join me in supporting Georgia Equality during their end of year fundraising drive this year.
Georgia Equality Endorses Mary Norwood in Runoff Election for Atlanta Mayor
Like so many of our members, as a board, we have carefully weighed how to move forward in the run off for Atlanta Mayor.
We had originally hoped to work with both candidates and a variety of LGBT organizations to sponsor a forum to delve deeply into the future vision each candidate had for LGBTQ Atlantans and people living with HIV/AIDS.
