A big night for Georgia Equality’s Endorsees

After a long night of watching election returns come in we still don’t know what will happen in the Gubernatorial race but one thing is certain: it was a great night for pro-equality candidates around the state — and we have you to thank for it! Over the past many months GE staff and volunteers have registered over 3,000 people to vote and engaged in over 100,000 voter contacts and it really made the difference.

Here are some of the highlights:

Matthew Wilson won his race in HD 80 and will become the 5th openly LGBTQ member of the state legislature Continue reading

We must stand together against all forms of hate

The Georgia Equality family sends our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and community grieving the tragic loss at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA this weekend.

We honor the lives of the victims by adding our voice in opposition to anti-Semitism, and standing firmly with the Jewish community so that a tragedy like this doesn’t happen again.

We’d also like to voice our sadness at the news of the shooting occurring during the Briss of newly adopted boys of a gay couple. Events like this have become all too common for our communities, and we must stand together against all forms of violence.

Those wishing to attending a memorial with Atlanta’s Jewish community are invited to Congregation Bet Haverim for a vigil on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m.

We will continue to fight until all of us can live our lives free of the fear of violence or persecution because of who we love or how we celebrate our faith.

ATLANTA, GA – Today Georgia Equality responded to Sunday’s Georgia EqualityNew York Times report, detailing the Trump Administration’s plans to adopt a new legal definition for the term “sex” that could eviscerate federal protections for transgender Americans. The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is considering a proposal that would define sex as “a person’s status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth.” This definition means that the federal government would cease to recognize the basic humanity of transgender and intersex Americans. Reflections from the Road

Over the past seven months, GE’s Statewide Outreach Organizer Shannon Clawson has been on the road, registering LGBTQ Georgians and our allies to vote. Here’s her latest update:

With the deadline for voter registration approaching THIS TUESDAY October 9th, the Super Voter Team is winding down and reflecting on what we have accomplished so far. For seven months, the Super Voter team has been driving all over Georgia registering citizens to vote. We’ve gone to VA Hospitals, MARTA Stations, Universities in Morrow, Macon, Lawrenceville, Gainesville, Atlanta, Athens, and Augusta. We’ve gone door to door in LaGrange, canvassed at ColGay in Columbus, and visited churches in Stone Mountain. We’ve registered voters at five different Pride Festivals in five cities this summer and enjoyed engaging our beautiful community all over this state. In all, we have registered 3,130 Georgians in 15 different counties! We couldn’t have done it without our dedicated volunteers, team leads, and partner groups all over the state. Continue reading
