Ending the Epidemic: “Equitable Access, Every One’s Voice”

In commemoration of World AIDS Day 2021, Georgia Equality, in partnership with other local and statewide organizations, hosted multiple events, bringing attention to the HIV epidemic, working to increase awareness and knowledge around HIV, and to call for an increased response to move toward ending the HIV epidemic.

 

VIRTUAL

On Wednesday, December 1st, Georgia Equality’s Youth HIV Policy Advisor cohort along with our Ending the Epidemic Fellows, conducted a Virtual Youth HIV Policy Summit, focusing on equitable access in rural, non-metropolitan areas of Georgia on The discussion was centered around how you, your fellow elected officials, and other civic leaders can help end the epidemic in this state. 

VALDOSTA

Georgia Equality, in partnership with Valdosta State University’s Odum Library and VSU Campus Pride, commemorates World AIDS Day 2021 with the mixed media art exhibit , “AIDS at 40: A Retrospection”. On display are panels from the National AIDS Memorial Quilt, a selection of photography from Billy Howard’s collection, “Epitaphs for the Living,” and the re-installation of “African Americans Responding to AIDS: 1981-1991.” The exhibit is open from November 18th and December 15th.

A World AIDS Day reception will be held tomorrow, December 4th in the Odum Library, from 3:00 PM and 5:00 PM, with a panel discussion centered on HIV’s impact on Georgia’s rural communities. The exhibit and reception is open to the public and free of charge.

ATLANTA

On December 1st, Georgia Equality and Saint Mark United Methodist Church held a candlelight vigil honoring 40 years of HIV in the city of Atlanta. The vigil began at 6:00 PM with a period of reflection and the reading of the names of those we’ve lost to HIV and AIDS, and prominent leaders and advocates in the community spoke on their experience and Atlanta’s history with the HIV epidemic.

Compass Cares, Reach to Impact, North Central Health District, Fort Valley State University’s P.R.I.D.E. Navigator, and Georgia Equality held the Annual World AIDS Day Candlelight Vigil at Tattnall Square Park to commemorate those lost to complications of AIDS. This event was an opportunity to commemorate those who we lost to HIV/AIDS complications, and was also a time for the greater community to be introduced to local resources for HIV/AIDS treatment and medical services, Sexual Health Prevention Services, Counseling Services, Community Change Agents, and Public Safety services.
