I’ve got some troubling news—the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ fight has come to Georgia. This latest attack on LGBTQ kids is disturbing, but not new. A remarkably similar bill just passed Florida’s legislature, and while we’re busy reviewing the exact language of SB 613, here’s what we know: This bill attemps to stifle the full inclusion of LGBTQ students in classrooms across Georgia.Â
We will do everything in our power to stop this this bill, but these endless attacks require a continuous and sustained defense from all of us, and that’s why I’m writing today — to ask you to join our fight by committing to a monthly contribution to Georgia Equality.Â
From removing student artwork in Athens, to attempts to ban trans students from sport, and this latest attempt to suppress LGBTQ students in the classroom, anti-LGBTQ forces are hard at work in Georgia. But there’s good news—to pass these harmful bills, they have to go through us! For the past 8 years, we’ve stood together to keep all anti-LGBTQ bills from becoming law in Georgia, but that record is under threat today. SB 435, SB 613 and others do nothing to protect or support students, rather they serve only to spread hateful stereotypes. But these bills have powerful supporters so we need you to stand with us again this year.Â
LGBTQ students and families have just as much right to see themselves reflected in the classroom, the library, and on the field of play as other students do, but the attacks won’t stop here. This fight will continue after the legislature adjourns, through the rest of the year, and next. And that’s why I’m asking you to commit to making a monthly contribution to Georgia Equality. We can and we must outlast these anti-LGBTQ efforts. You can help make that possible — with a monthly contribution today.Â
Together, we can stop this bill. I know it.
