Columbus Townhall

Columbus Ga – COLGAY Pride hosted the 3rd annual Town Hall in Columbus, GA on Thursday November 5th at the Columbus Public Library Auditorium.  A panel discussion on Transgender issues was the focus.  Chanel Haley, Transgender Inclusion Organizer for Georgia Equality attended to support the event as one of the invited panelist.

The purpose of the town hall was to make the public aware of the struggles and accomplishments of the LGBT community.

“We are part of the general community. We have the same values. We just want to be able to work and have fair housing health care and be able to use the restroom that aligns with our gender. It’s about equality. We’re not looking for any special treatment just equal treatment,” said Chanel Haley.

Georgia Equality’s  Youth HIV Policy Advisors’ Program

In response to high and increasing HIV rates among youth in Atlanta, Georgia Equality launched the Youth HIV Policy Advisors Program in April of 2015. This program matches selected elected officials with youth advocates who will serve as their Special Advisors on Youth HIV. Youth works one-on-one with policymakers to address policy barriers to HIV prevention.

On October 14, the participants held their first youth-led successful educational event luncheon with local elected officials and community leaders, Here Are The Facts, Have Our Backs.  The YHPA participants were able to tell their stories of the realities of living with HIV in Atlanta and educate their elected officials on needs and recommendations moving forward
