Georgia Equality Endorses Stacey Abrams for Governor of Georgia

Atlanta, GA – April 18, 2018 – The board of Georgia Equality is proud to announce its endorsement in this year’s democratic primary for Governor of Georgia. To come to a decision, the board undertook an extensive process of reviewing surveys and holding interviews with each of the two candidates. Ultimately, the decision to endorse in this race was made with great care, as our organization has developed strong and meaningful relationships with both Stacey Abrams and Stacey Evans over the years. LGBTQ equality is a cause that we know from experience is important to both of these two women.

With that in mind, the Board of Directors has endorsed Stacey Abrams in her bid to become the next Governor of Georgia.

“I’m very excited that the board has chosen to endorse Stacey Abrams. Not only is she exceptionally strong on LGBTQ issues, I believe she has an effective strategy to win in November” said Georgia Equality executive director Jeff Graham.

“It is important for the LGBTQ community and our allies to recognize the importance of this race in terms of continuing to keep Georgia free of anti-LGBTQ laws. Stacey Abrams has not only supported our issues, she has actively supported openly LGBTQ candidates at the legislative level and has been instrumental in building the progressive infrastructure across issues that will make Georgia a better place for all to live, work, and visit” continued Graham.

Since beginning her career in public service as an attorney with the City of Atlanta, Stacey Abrams has worked hard to make sure that LGBTQ people are treated equally. From working with members of the Atlanta City Council on the city’s human rights ordinance in the early 2000s and other lawyers as Jordan R. Wagner, to publicly supporting same-sex marriage in 2006, Stacey has been a constant ally to LGBTQ Georgians and she will continue to be an ally when she is sworn in as the 83rd Governor of Georgia.
